PUPPY TRAINING / ADULT DOG 0BEDIENCE CLASSES / COURSES / SOCIALISATION - LIVERPOOL - MERSEYSIDE
West Lancs Canine Centre was established in June 1989 by Guy and Jean Richardson. Dog trainers at the centre are experienced in all aspects of dog training. Guy is a multi award winning dog handler, trainer and dog behaviour specialist and is a member of several professional dog training organisations including the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers. He has been handling and training dogs for 43 years, 31 of those years working as a full time professional. He is also the puppy training, adult dog training, dog behavioural therapist, and dog behaviour consultant for the RSPCA LIVERPOOL, MERSEYSIDE, ANIMALS IN NEED, MERSEYSIDE and FRESHFIELDS ANIMAL RESCUE. He is also an expert witness dealing with cases where owners and their dogs find themselves the subject of civil or criminal prosecution, i.e. The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. See our newsletter for further information. There is no substitute for hands on training experience gained over a lifetime of working with dogs.

Chief Instructor Sharon Butler is head veterinary nurse at a local veterinary surgery. She possesses a wealth of dog training experience. Sharon has twice passed instructors courses with the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers, achieving a second grade honours pass on her first course and a pass on her second course, at the first grade.

Instructor Rory Larsen has passed his first dog training instructor course with the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers with an honours pass at the second grade

Instructor Craig Richardson has been training his dogs at the centre since 1992. He has attended two dog training instructor courses with the British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers and qualified with honours passes at the first and second grade. Craig was one of the original members of the West Lancs Dog Display Team from 1992 with his German Shepherd Dog "Kurt".

You can be assured of receiving the very best dog training in a superb purpose built venue. Dog training is great fun for owner and dog and provides a bond for life between you and your dog.
West Lancs Canine Centre was extensively improved in 2002 with the addition of two further large grassed training areas. This enabled the centre to be divided up into three large training areas and four secure, grassed socialisation areas totaling approximately 7 acres. The major improvement undertaken was the building of a new indoor training area to enable us to continue training in inclement weather. The centre is fully floodlit and has toilet facilities. Refreshments are available on site.

Incorporated in all our puppy training and dog training classes is the KENNEL CLUB GOOD CITIZEN DOG SCHEME. We offer the PUPPY TRAINING FOUNDATION SCHEME for all puppies less than 12 months of age. For puppies that have completed the puppy foundation training and adult dogs over 12 months of age we offer the KENNEL CLUB BRONZE, SILVER AND GOLD AWARDS. An information pack about the scheme will be given to you when you enrol at the centre. On completion of each level of training you will be given a rosette and a certificate to recognise your achievement with your canine friend.

All training classes last for one hour. You may vary the day you attend classes to suit your commitments, just check the timetable.

The levels of training available at the centre are:-

PUPPY TRAINING COURSE - All puppies under 9 months of age.

ELEMENTARY DOG TRAINING COURSE - All dogs over 9 months of age.

INTERMEDIATE DOG TRAINING COURSE - Dogs having completed the
elementary course achieving the
required standard.

ADVANCED DOG TRAINING COURSE - Dogs progressing to the top level
of training on offer at the centre
having completed the Intermediate
training course and the Kennel Club
GCDS Gold. Owners and dogs may
be invited to train with the display
team.

Puppies may attend training classes once fully vaccinated, usually from about 13 - 14 weeks of age. All dogs attending classes must be fully vaccinated. We also insist that all dogs are vaccinated against kennel cough - please speak to your vet on this matter. Please have a look at the link on our site to The Future of Vaccinations. This link has kindly been provided by Nobivac.

Early socialisation for puppies and dogs is of great importance - we encourage this both on and off lead under the strict supervision of our instructors.

Dogs are creatures of habit, so "dog training" simply means cultivating the good habits and restricting the bad habits Although the training technique varies with the age, size and temperament of the individual dog. Initially, the training syllabus will be confined to a few basic exercises to promote a happy working relationship and establish some element of control. At the training class, you will be shown what to do and how to do it and it is expected that you will carry out this routine daily starting with a gradual introduction of a few minutes duration and building up to 10 or 15 minutes each day, bearing in mind that too much training at this stage can be just as bad as too little!

The instruction will comprise of temperament training and an introduction to basic obedience and agility exercises including walking to heel , recall, distance control, communication using voice and hand-signals and the "stay" exercises. You will be shown how to play with your dog in order that you both learn how to have fun together. It is most important that if possible the same person attends with the dog for training and that THAT PERSON ONLY should carry out the subsequent daily training.

We offer expert training and guidance for owner and dog, combined with the use of correct training equipment which is available at the centre. We cannot emphasise enough. the importance of correct training from as early as possible. By the end of your course, you should be making good progress, developing control and understanding of your dog. Remember a trained dog is an asset, whereas an untrained dog can be a liability.

The aim of the West Lancs Canine Centre is to promote the training and welfare of the dog, using modern, motivational, positive methods which focus on the dog's behaviour pattern, and if need be modifying it to an acceptable one. In doing this our methods will be primarily reward and play training, however this does not rule out any aversion therapy that may be necessary. We will endeavour to provide the dog with a structured place in its human environment.

Could we please ask for your co-operation with the following requests:-

1. Please bring your dog's vaccination certificate with you when you start your training course. For daycare, puppy crèche, holiday pet care, residential training or activity holidays, we insist that your dog is also vaccinated against kennel cough

2. Do not feed your dog prior to classes, to avoid travel sickness.

3. Please groom your dog prior to classes and bring a brush or comb with you.

4. Please exercise your dog prior to entering the centre, if your dog soils the training area shovels and bins are provided.
CLEAN UP after your dog - it is your responsibility. Please carry poo bags with you at all times.

5. On your first visit to the centre please wait by the entrance to the training area for instructions, do not enter the socialisation areas without having seen a member of the centre`s staff.,

6. All dogs must wear a collar with an identity disc and be on a lead unless in the socialisation areas. A training lead and combi / collar are essential. We have the best hand made training equipment available, at reasonable prices. If you are in any doubt about equipment please wait until you attend the classes.

WE DO NOT APPROVE OF THE USE OF CHOKE CHAINS !

7. Please bring your dogs favourite tit bits and toy with you to encourage and reward good behaviour and to practice the retrieve exercise. A useful idea is to carry the treats and the retrieve article in a bag around your waist.

You may be interested in our daycare training crèche, overnight holiday pet care, and residential training or activity holidays. Kennelling facilities are available. Please book in advance of holidays etc to avoid disappointment.

Should you be experiencing behavioural problems with your dog please ask to speak to Guy. You can attend a one to one session with Guy prior to commencing training. If you find you are struggling on the classes please ask for a one to one. Remember we are there to help.

We sell dog training leads and collars, training aids and toys - please ask for details.

Some of you will achieve immediate results, but most of you will have to earn the response that indicates progress - to this end we are pleased to offer you the benefit of our experience

Please do not hesitate to contact us. If you experience any problems with your dog, advice is always available, either telephone or e mail us or call at the centre when we are open.
